父の日の起源について The origin of Father’s Day
ここでちょっと父の日の起源について。
Here’s about the origins of Father’s Day.
1909年頃、アメリカ・ワシントン州にあるスポケーンという街に住んでいたソラノスマートドットさんは、彼女を男手1つで育ててくれた父親にお礼を贈りたくて地元の商店主たちや教会の牧師に提案し、父親の誕生月である6月に祝ったと言われており、それが始まりとされています。
その後アメリカ全土に広がり、1972年アメリカ合衆国大統領によって公式に制定されました。日本も同年(1972年)に「父の日」が制定され、毎年6月第3日曜日に祝われるようになりました。
Around 1909, Solano Smartdot, who lived in the town of Spokane in Washington State, USA, wanted to thank her father for raising her by himself, so she proposed it to local shopkeepers and church pastors, and celebrated it in June, the month of her father’s birth.
It was officially enacted by the President of the United States in 1972. In the same year (1972), Father’s Day was established in Japan, and it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year.
「父の日」は、父親に日頃の感謝の気持ちを伝える日としてアメリカで1909年頃に始まりました。ですのでこの日は、感謝の気持ちを示す為にプレゼントを贈ったり、家族で食事をしたりすることが一般的とされています。
日本では、父親にネクタイを贈る、家族で焼肉に行くなど、様々な家族イベントを行われます。
Father’s Day began around 1909 in the United States as a day to gratitude to fathers. Therefore, it is common to give gifts and eat with your family to show your gratitude.
In the Japan, various family events are held, such as giving a tie to the father, and going to yakiniku with the family.
オーストラリアの父の日について About Father’s Day in Australia
オーストラリアの父の日は、多くの国とは異なり9月第1日曜日です。
これには諸説あります。
Father’s Day in Australia is the first Sunday in September.

当時の事情 Circumstances at that time
飛行機が今ほど発達していなかった当時、イギリスからの移民してきた人達は家族や大切な人達と離ればなれとなり、贈り物をする際、その当時だと船を利用するしかなく、2～3ヶ月必要でした。
6月の父の日にイギリスから送られてくるプレゼントがオーストラリア到着するのが、その2～3ヶ月後の9月。
なので父の日も9月に設定された。
At that time, when airplanes were not as developed as they are now, immigrants from England were separated from their families and loved ones, and at that time, they had to use a ship to give gifts, which required 2~3 months.
Gifts sent from the UK on Father’s Day in June arrive in Australia 2~3 months later, in September.
So Father’s Day was also set for September.
季節の関係 Season
シドニーの6月の季節は冬です。お祝いの為、家族でバーベキューやピクニックを行うにしても寒いんです。そんな寒い季節にわざわざ父の日を祝うことは無い。暖かくなってからお祝いする方が家族全員嬉しいはず。
季節の関係上、6月は寒いため春先の9月になった。
どちらもオーストラリアらしさがあります。
Sydney June season is winter. It’s cold even for family barbecues and picnics for celebrations. They don’t bother to celebrate Father’s Day during such cold season. The whole family will be happier if they celebrate it gets warmer.
Due to the season, June was cold(winter) and September was in early spring(Warm).

オーストラリアでの父の日の様子ですが、家族で食事に出かけたり、子供達は学校でこの日の為にメッセージカードや似顔絵を書いたり、ピクニックに出かけたり、プレゼントを用意するなど様々です。
