こんばんは、今もシドニー郊外にあるレストランで勤務しているシドニーマンです。
高額時給が滑車をかけ、ここ数ヶ月仕事より人が余っている状態が続いているシドニーです。そんな状態なので毎日のように問い合わせがあり面接を行っているのですが、おかげで国籍問わずやらかしてくれる人達(雇われない人たち）に共通するパターンを見つけました。
仕事探しをしている人達で、もしこれにひとつでも該当するのであれば要注意です。
Sydney has been surplus more people than work for the past few months. I receive inquiries at the workplace(Restaurant) almost every day and conduct interviews, and I found a common pattern of people who cannot be hired regardless of nationality.
If you are looking for a job and one of these applies to you, be careful.
営業時間に来る Come to trading hours
営業時間に、「仕事探しています」と来る人達は今はダメです。コロナ前では、その行動力が認められ採用されるケースがありましたが、今は違います。どのお店もコロナ前と比べて少人数で営業しているので、これに対応する時間がありません。
People who come in restaurant trading hours and say, “I’m looking for a job” are no good now. Before COVID-19, there were cases where their ability to take action was recognized and hired. All shops are open with fewer people than before COVID-19, so we don’t have time to deal with this.
*コロナ前と比べて雇用しているスタッフの数が少ないのは、高額時給への対応とコロナを生き抜いてきた企業努力によるものです。
The fact that we are hiring fewer staff than before Corona is due to the high hourly wages and the efforts of companies that have survived the pandemic.
客を装う Pretend to be a customer
客として来店し食事を済ませてから、「実は仕事探しています。」と言ってくる輩もいます。
なぜそんなことをするのか全く理解できないのですが、客としてきて食事をしたから断れないのだろうと思っているのなら大間違いです。上記の「営業時間に来る」と同じで困った人達です。このような事を行わなくても普通に面接のアポを取れば良いと思うのですが。
Some people come to the restaurant as customers, when finish their meals, and then say, “Actually, I’m looking for a job.”
I don’t understand why they do that. These are the same troubled people as the above “come to trading hours”. Even if you don’t do this, I think you should make an appointment for an interview.
メールや電話で聞いてくる Ask by email or phone
面接はとても大事です。顔を合わせお互い人間性を見ます。言葉を交わし場合によっては即採用も有り得るからです。それを仕事を探しているのにメールだけで、「時給はいくら?」、「沢山働けれるかどうか?」等質問してくる人達がいます。
高額時給で沢山仕事に入れたら給料だって多くなる。そんなことは誰もがわかること。だけどまだ働いてもいない、お互いまだ分からない。なのにこのことだけに焦点を当てられたら、多くの場合不採用になってしまいます。
Job interviews are very important. We look at each other face to face during job interviews. This is because they may be hired immediately in some cases. There were people who asked some questions such as “How much is your hourly wage?” or “Can you work a lot?” by e-mail.
If you put in a lot of work at a high hourly wage, the salary will be large. Everyone knows that. But we haven’t worked yet, we don’t know each other yet. However, if you focus only on this, you will often be rejected.
メールの返信が遅すぎる Too late replies E-mail
面接を済ませ、こちらからメールを送ってもその返信が遅すぎれば他の人を採用される場合が多いです。
今のシドニーは、仕事に対して人が余っている状態です。こちらから送ったメールへの返信が遅すぎたら他の人に仕事は取られると思った方がよいです。
迷惑メールに分けられている場合もあります。仕事探し中はメールを頻繁にチェックしておきましょう。
When we send an email after the job interview, we will often be hired by someone else coz of you reply too late.
見え透いた嘘をついてくる lying
面接官やマネージャーは、それなりに経験を積んでいます。なので大抵の嘘は勘づかれたり見抜かれているものです。
最近私の周りであった事例で言えば、
私が働いているレストランに、日本の小料理屋でキッチン全般を任されていた男性が面接に来ました。
1からキッチン業務を教えなくて済むので直ぐに採用して、〇曜日から来てください。と伝えたのですが当日来ませんでした。
それから数日後連絡が来て、今から働けます。と言ってきたのです。
その時はまだスタッフを探していた状況でしたが、断りました。
この男性、当店をキープしておいて他のレストランに面接に行きトライアルを受けて落ち、それからわざとらしくこちらに連絡してきたのです。
他にも、散々メールでやり取りしているにも関わらず迷惑メールに入っていて気が付かなかったです。と言ってくる不届き者もいたりします。
また面接に来ないケースもあります。
諸事情があってその日に来れない場合は当然あります。それこそメールないし電話で連絡してくれたら、こちらとしても嬉しいですし、なんと言っても好印象で他の人より1歩抜きん出ることが出来ると思うのですが。
Interviewers and managers have an experiences. So most lies are misunderstood or detected.
In a recent case,
At the restaurant where I work, a man who was in charge of the kitchen at a small restaurant in Japan came for a job interview.
I thought I don’t have to teach kitchen job from beginning , so hire immediately and request to work from 〇 day of the week. But he didn’t come on the day.
A few days later, I got a call and he said ,”I can work now.”
At that time, I was still looking for some staff, but I refused.
He also failed to job interview with another restaurants, and then contacted us again.
In addition, I didn’t notice that it was in junk mail. Some people say.
There are also cases where they do not come to the job interview.
Of course, there are some cases where you cannot come on that day due to various circumstances. I would be happy if you could contact me by email or phone, and I think that I can make a good impression and be one step ahead of others.
友達/恋人と来る Come with friends/lovers
もう分かりません。
友達もしくは恋人と一緒に仕事を探していると言ってきたりします。それはそれで別にこちらが干渉する訳では無いので構わないですが、こちらが必要としている人数が1人で、友達もしくは恋人と合わせて2人で来た場合、困るのはこちら側ではありません。どちらかは採用されませんし最悪どちらも不採用です。
I don’t understand anymore.
They may tell you that they are looking for a job with a friend or lover. It’s okay because we don’t interfere with it, but if the number of people we need is one and then two people come together with friends or lovers, one of them will not be hired, or both will not be hired.
高額時給 High hourly wage
シドニーは物価高で高額時給です。
仕事探しでそこばかりに焦点を合わせてきても、意外に店長やマネージャーにはバレるものです。なので仕事に就いていれば高給が貰えると思った大間違いです。仕事ができないと判断されたら徐々にシフトが削られていきます。
Sydney is expensive and has high hourly wages.
Even if you focus only on high hourly wages when looking for a job, restaurant managers will find out. So don’t think that if you get a job, you’ll get a high salary. If you cannot work well, your shifts will be reduce.
レジュメ Resume
仕事を探しているのです。面接時にはレジュメを提出できるよう準備しておきましょう。またメールで問い合わせする際もレジュメは添付して送っている方が面接官や店長は必ず見てくれます。そのおかげで面接にこぎつけれたとか採用されたとかはよくある話です。
Be prepared to submit your resume at the time of the job interview. Also, when you make an inquiry by e-mail, it’s better to attached your resume, the interviewers or restaurant managers will always see it. It is a common story that was able to get a job interview or be hired because of that.
土地勘 Suburb Intuition
土地勘が無さすぎるのも問題です。
面接時に勤務地があるお店と随分離れている場所に住んでいる方が面接に来る場合があります。
そんな人は採用されたとしても通勤に時間がかかりすぎる為、初めは良いですが慣れてくると他を探して移ります。
帰宅する方法まで自分でわかっていないと困ります。
また、店長やマネージャーは土地勘があるものです。通勤が難しいと思われるサバーブに住んでいる人は雇いたがりません。
At the time of the job interview, a person who lives in a place that is far from the restaurant where you work may come to the interview.
Even if such a person is hired, it takes too long to commute, so he or she quits soon.
If you don’t know how to get home, you’re in trouble.
In addition, restaurant managers have a good intuition of the suburb. People who live far away can’t hire them.
*ちなみに世界中から人々が来ているおかげでアコモデーションも足りていません。本来なら便利で経済的な家賃で済むはずのシェアアコモデーションですら結構高い家賃です。なので都合よく職場の近くに住むところを見つけるのも苦労するのです。
私の経験で言えば、
その昔ウーロンゴン(Wollongong)に住んでいた日本人男性が仕事の度に電車でシドニーまで来ていたの覚えています。
ちなみに電車を使い、ウーロンゴン(Wollongong)からシドニーへは片道1時間45分かかります。なのでこの日本人男性は仕事の度に片道1時間45分以上かけてきていました。
これは当然コロナ前の出来事で今であれば遠すぎて即断られます。
In my experience,
I remember a Japanese(man) who lived in Wollongong and used to come to Sydney by train every time when he worked.
it takes 1 hour and 45 minutes one way from Wollongong to Sydney by train. So he used to spend more than 1 hour and 45 minutes one way every time he worked.
Of course, this happened before COVID-19 and is too far away to be NOT adopted now.
英語力 English
英語力が無いのも問題です。
ここはオーストラリア、シドニーです。
公用語は英語です。英語が出来て困りません。
職場では日本人以外の人達と一緒に仕事をするケースが多いですし、お客様と接する場合ほとんどは英語でやり取りします。
それなりには出来ないと困りますし日常生活にも支障をきたします。
流暢に話せなくて良いのです。カタカナ英語でも良いのです。
仕事をするわけです。Yes、No だけでは済みません。
それなりに出来た方が良いです。
This is Sydney, Australia.
The official language is English. It is better to be able to speak English.
In the workplace, work with people other than Japan, and mostly communicate with customer in English.
You don’t have to be able to speak fluently.
It’s not just a “YES” or “NO” to work in restaurant.
ばら撒きすぎ Scattering
仕事を探すためレジュメをアチコチにばら撒くことは良いのですが、それを見て真面目に返事を送ったこっちの身にもなって欲しいです。
この手の人は、こちらからメールが来ていても気が付かず面接が出来ず仕事を得ることができないです。またそのメールに気づいても時すでに遅しでそれから連絡されても何もかもが終わっています。
It’s ok to scatter your resume to find a job, but this kind of person can’t realised when an email is sent from restaurant. Also, even if you notice the email, it was already too late, everything is over.
今のシドニーは人が余っている状態です。それでいてコロナ前では、「仕事を探すのであればレジュメをとにかく配ってみる」みたいなことが書かれてある本をよく見ました。それをまだ鵜呑みにしていると大変です。あの頃は人は余っていませんでした。なんだかんだで需要と供給のバランスがとれていてそれで何とかなりましたが、今は事情が違います。仕事に対して人が多いんです。なのでこちらが気になって連絡してその後反応が無ければ次にいきます。現場は少数人数で営業を行っているのでこの手のことに時間を割かれるのは大変疲れるのです。
There is a surplus of people in Sydney right now. I often saw books that said things like before COVID-19, “If you’re looking for a job, just hand out your resume.” It’s hard to still swallow it. At that time, supply and demand were balanced. But the situation is different now.
レジュメをばら撒きすぎたら自分でコントロール出来なくなるのでほどほどにしておいて下さい。
If you scatter your resume too much, you will not be able to control it, so please keep it moderate.

シドニーの飲食業界も高額時給ですが、だからといって誰でも仕事に就けると思ってはいけません。あわよくば自分もその恩恵を受けようと世界中からシドニーに人々が来ています。
競争は激しいのです。

コロナ前であれば、日本食レストランは日本人にとって救いの仕事場でしたが、今は各国の人が働いています。
その中で働く訳ですから、英語は出来た方が良いですし、日本人だからといって優遇されるわけではありません。日本人だからこそ、必死に働かなければならないのです。
都合よく仕事を見つけれる人はいます。でも誰もがそうであれば苦労しません。ほとんどの人は仕事探しに苦労するのが今のシドニーです。
今回ご紹介したNGに当てはまる言動を行うのであれば、シドニーでの仕事探しは困難を極めると思ってください。
Before COVID-19, Japanese restaurants were a saving workplace for Japanese, but people from all over the world are working now.It is better to be able to speak English, and if you are a Japanese that does not mean to be given preferential treatment.
If you fall into the NG introduced here, please think that finding a job in Sydney will be extremely difficult.
